Kathmandu: Chinese Communist Party Politburo Member Yuan Jiajun's recent three-day visit to Nepal has solidified the long-standing friendship and cooperation between the two nations, while also reaffirming their commitment to the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). During his visit, Yuan engaged in various high-level meetings with Nepali leaders to discuss crucial issues of bilateral interest and explore ways to strengthen mutual ties.

The discussions during the visit encompassed the relations between the Communist Party of China (CPC) and Nepali parties, as well as the progress of project implementation under the BRI and other Chinese-led initiatives. The BRI, initiated by President Xi Jinping in 2013, is a significant development and infrastructure project spanning across various countries. However, Nepal has been cautious in accepting the BRI, citing concerns over its effectiveness and track record in other global contexts, where some projects have faced challenges and delays.

Notably, a delegation from the CPC's foreign department visited Nepal in June 2023 to address the situation and urge Nepal to commence projects under the BRI. China has been eager to convince major stakeholders in Nepal about the viability and success of BRI projects. During Yuan's visit, both sides sought common ground to address Nepal's concerns and forge a way forward to enhance cooperation.

Yuan's courtesy meeting with President Ramchandra Paudel reflected the importance of bilateral ties between Nepal and China. The Chinese leader also engaged in a virtual dialogue with Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda,' highlighting their commitment to enhancing cooperation between the countries.

Acting Prime Minister Purna Bahadur Khadka also received a courtesy call from Yuan, during which they discussed expanding cooperation in various fields, including agriculture, food security, industry, employment, urbanization, trade, culture, and tourism.

Yuan further pledged China's continued assistance in Nepal's poverty reduction programs and expressed commitment to enhancing cooperation in defense, training, and capacity building. The Chinese leader appreciated Nepal's adherence to the One-China Policy and its dedication to not allowing its territory to be used against China.

The visit also laid emphasis on the practical implementation of agreements and projects signed during Chinese President Xi Jinping's state visit to Nepal in 2019. This indicates the ongoing efforts to deepen cooperation in various sectors, emphasizing both countries' dedication to mutual prosperity and development.

In conclusion, Yuan Jiajun's visit has played a crucial role in strengthening Nepal-China relations and reinforcing the commitment to the Belt and Road Initiative. The discussions held during the visit have shown a willingness to address concerns and find common ground, signaling a positive trajectory for future engagement between the two nations.
